Parrot CampaignParrot Campaign

Objectives:

  1. To increase public awareness not to purchase or to keep curved beak avian/bird (in particularly parrot species).
  2. To spread information about the conservation of parrots in nature with the theme "Lebih Indah di Alam" (more beauty in the wild)
  3. To urge the Government to control the capture of and trade in curved beaks birds/avians.
  4. To increase the awareness of the local governments controlling the areas of the curved beaks avian/birds habitat to pay more attention to their conservation and e habitat protection.
  5. To ensure that all traded curved beaks avian/birds are not from illegal captures.

Background Information:

Each year one hundred thousand curved beaks avian/birds are trapped in Papua and Maluku (Mollucas) to be sent to Java and foreign countries. More than 95% curved beaks avian/birds traded are from captured in the wild. Curved beaks avian/parrots are favourite pets due to their mimicry ability.

In 2003 ProFauna successfully decreased the trapping of curved beak avians in Maluku Utara (North Moluccas) by up to 80%. Prior to that ProFauna proved the illegal shipment of 15,000 curved beaks avian originating in Maluku Utara to Java. Due to pressure from ProFauna, the local government of Maluku Utara has issued an instruction to make all trapping of curved beaks avian illegal. Local military officers have also enforced more control on their own soldiers (Indonesian National Soldiers) not to bring curved beak birds on the military aircrafts.
