Bantul is the epicentre and is very badly affected by the earth quake disaster. The area is now covered by ruins and tumbled down buildings. There is no service and utility available. It is difficult to access the area. More than 300,000 houses are affected. More than 6000 people died.

The areas where ProFauna’s team is working are:

No Village Cows Goats/sheepr
1. Krapyak village, Panjangtejo, Pundong district 103 32
2. Jaranan village, Panggungharjo, Sewon district 62 12
1. Sulanglor village, Jetis district 35 0
2. Jayan village, Kebon Agung, Imogiri district 47 3
Total 247 47

Rescue activities:

  1. At Pondak village, Bantul district - helping the chicken farms (belonging to local farmers: Slamet and Panut). On 03/06/2006: the team cleaned and cleared debris and damaged building of four chicken farms, working together with the department of live stock Bantul. Spraying and disinfecting the barns and poultry housing, clearing out carcases of dead chickens.
  2. 04/06/2006: Feeding. Assisted by the dept of live stocks, ProFauna’s members and students from Gajah Mada University, provided food for the live chickens. We provided chicken feed to last for one week.
  3. Performed health check on live stocks/cattles: assisted by the vets from the dept of live stocks, animals were given health assessment.
  4. 04/06/2006: Feeding cattle. Animals were given green grass and concentrates. Vitamins are given to the weak animals. The team had to travel quite some distance to obtain cattle feed and to bring it back.
  5. WSPA team from Costa Rica (Gerardo dan Juan Carlos) came to help.

It is estimated that the feed for the cattle would only last for 3 more days. The cattle are grouped together by the farmers. It is fear that the food would run out after 3 days. There is a problem with clean drinking water for the cattle. At present the villagers are attempting to drill the ground in search of water, however there is no electricity to pump the water out. Most of the quake survivors are still traumatised and living in squalor.

Unfortunately, some cattle are already infected with indigestion problem, diarrhoea and hypocalcaemia. Although there is data on the number of cattle before the earth quake, new data has not been obtained for the number of cattle surviving the earth quake.

In the meantime, Mount Merapi’s volcanic activities are increasingly worrying and more threatening with new lava avalanches and white thick sulphur clouds. We are on constant alert with a possible further volcano eruption. Work continues on the animal rescue.
