Petungsewu Wildlife Education Center (P-WEC)

Earth Day Celebrations

To celebrate Earth Day, P-WEC (www.p-wec.com), ProFauna's Wildlife Education Center, held two events: P-WEC exhibition in a shopping center (25th – 27th April 2008) and a seminar at the Educational Center (27th April 2008).

Around 150 visitors visited the exhibition in the shopping centre to learn about P-WEC and its activities. Because ProFauna's educational methods are also delivered through games and outdoor activities in order to appeal to children, a number of visitors have suggested that ProFauna try to include this form of wildlife education in the school curriculum. On the last day of the exhibition, ProFauna received good audience feedback on a 30-minute movie about orangutans.

The second event was a seminar: 'Global Warning: Life Warning". There were two keynote speakers; Purnawan D. Negara, a board-member of WALHI (Friend of the Earth Indonesia), who spoke about the cause and effect of global warming. Negara proposed a good motto: 'Think critically, act locally" and encouraged audience members including students, environment activists and villagers, to start looking for simple but effective ways to improve their own local environment. In doing so, we could all make a big difference globally.

The second speaker was ProFauna Indonesia chairman, Rosek Nursahid, who spoke about the global warming effects on wildlife.

'Many endangered species are facing extinction more rapidly because of global warming, as their habitats are shrinking more quickly."

Nursahid also urged the audience to take action and to start living a more green life by saving electricity where possible, using less plastic, purchasing eco-friendly products and planting trees.

The two events have raised people awareness about wildlife and have encouraged people to take action to protect wildlife.
