ProFauna Campaign on the Protection of Indonesian Parrots in North Maluku
ProFauna staged a campaign demonstration on the protection of Indonesian parrots on 7th August 2008. The campaign was intended to urge the government of North Maluku province to stop parrots smuggling from North Maluku to the Philippines and some places in Java, Indonesia. ProFauna also pressures the government to raise the status of white Cockatoo (Cacatua alba), endemic species of Northern Maluku many of which are still being poached for trade, as Indonesian protected species.
The demonstration was conducted in front of the North Maluku Governor's building. ProFauna brought a gigantic balloon of Lory to attract the corwd and media. This unique campaign became headline news for some local newspapers in North Maluku. ProFauna had the chance to meet a representative of North Maluku Governor on the protection of Indonesian parrots from North Maluku. The official consented to strictly enforce the law to protect the birds and invited ProFauna to attend follow-up meeting to discus the problems.
On last 22nd May 200, ProFauna launched PIRATED PARROTS report uncovering the parrots smuggling from Maluku to the Philippines. About 10,000 parrots are caught from the wild in North Maluku to suplly the illegal markets, domestically and internationally.
